Dennis Galligan was John Galligan's grandfather. He was born in County Limerick, Ireland, on 17 Mar 1833, married Ellen Dore in 1856 and died at age 78 on 14 May 1911 in La Crosse, Jackson, Minnesota. This photo is undated, and was likely taken in the late 1800s or early 1900s.
Dennis crossed the water when a mere youth took up his abode in Canada, living the greater portion of the time at Montreal. He was married in 1856 and while still living in Canada, three of his children, James, Mrs. Mary Lynch and John were born. He came to Minnesota in 1866, settling first at Rushford, and coming to Lanesboro in 1868.
His great-granddaughter, Mary Clare Kane, recalled "he was a smart man and well to do. A building in Lanesboro is named after him. He was active in town and church affairs. He also was a typical Irish man and liked his drink. The reason my father [John Galligan] never drank even beer was because when he was a little boy, they would send him to the saloon to bring his grandfather home."
