White River National Forest 11 August 08
The weekend of August 09, 2008 Andrew, Norma, Donald, Tiffany and AJ (a 7 year old neighbor) took off into the White River National Forest for a camping trip, two nights. It is located about 25 miles north of Rifle and New Castle. From there we took Little Box Canyon road up the mountain about 5 miles. It is a road, but it is so steep and bumpy you have to have a 4x4 to travel it. Therefore, it limits the number of people who can make it up there. We found off another long trail an established camp site, mostly used by hunters. This is a very remote camping experience. John would like it. After all the time and miles and miles of exploring on trails, we only saw one person. We were alittle concerned about bears and stuff, but we had no problems. We kept care of the food supplies and leftovers. We camped, explored trails and made campfires. In some places the forest is so thick you can't look 20 feet in either direction. Then there were places that were wide open meadows. We were at about 9,300' elevation and the temperatures were cool and humid.
