Disney Land/Sea Vacation (May-Jun 2009)

Kathy decided to celebrate her birthday with Mickey and his friends. She booked a 3 day land/4 day sea vacation at Walt Disney World in Florida. Rachel and Mary Clare joined Kathy for the celebration. We left on Wednesday, 5/27, and spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express at the Orlando airport. We stayed 3 nights at the Polynesian Resort while visiting Epcot (Thu 5/28), Magic Kingdom (Fri 5/29), Hollywood Studios (Sat 5/30), and Animal Kingdom (Sun 5/31). Sunday afternoon we headed on a Disney bus to Port Canaveral to catch the Disney Wonder for 4 nights. The ship docked at Nassau Bahamas on Mon 6/1, but we stayed on the ship to enjoy activities and rest! Tue 6/2 was spent at the Disney private island, Castaway Cay. Wed 6/3 was spent at sea. Thu 6/4 was an early arrival at Port Canaveral (breakfast at 6:45 am) and then many hours spent at the airport waiting for departures back to Denver (410p Southwest) and Dallas (550p American).

  • Mary Clare and Rachel in front of Spaceship Earth, the many-faceted "geosphere" that has become the universal symbol of Epcot. A common misconception is that Spaceship Earth is a geodesic dome. It is a geosphere. A dome is only half a sphere, while Spaceship Earth is almost completely round. Affectionately known to many simply as "the Ball", Spaceship Earth is indeed a sight to behold. • Rachel is posing in front of The Land which occupies six acres. This enormous skylighted pavilion examines the nature of one of everybody's favorite topics - food. It also gives guests a chance to soar above the clouds in a celebration of flight on the attraction Soarin'. We got a Fastpass for later in the afternoon. On this high-flying new attraction, you'll be suspended in a hang glider 45 feet in the air, above a giant IMAX projection dome, and treated to an aerial tour of some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes the state of California has to offer. With the wind in your hair and your legs dangling in the breeze, the multi-passenger hang glider feels so convincingly real that you may be tempted to pull up your feet for fear of tripping over a treetop as you dip down toward the group. During the rather peaceful journey, flyers glide toward the Upper Yosemite Falls of Yosemite Valley, past an active naval aircraft carrier in San Diego Bay, by San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, and then down over the vast deserts in Death Valley and the lush wine county of Napa Valley. • We picked up a Kimmunicator from Kim Possible which took us to Norway and then Mexico for a special mission. Rachel's mission allowed us to spend time inside the great pyramid which included the Gran Fiesta Tour starring the Three Caballeros attraction. The Three Caballeros (Donald Duck, Jose, and Panchito) are reuniting for a big show in Mexico City! Unfortunately, the ever-mischievous Donald has gone missing in Mexico - and guests join Panchito and Jose in the quest to find him. In doing so, you will be treated to a whirlwind (if slow-moving) boat tour of the country. The cheery montage of film, props, and Audio-Animatronics figures is reminiscent of It's a Small World, though on a much smaller scale. We were happy to look around the Plaza De Los Amigos inside the pyramid during the thunderstorm. After Mexico, we proceeded around the World Showcase and visited Norway, China, Germany, and Italy. Along the way to The American Adventure we found this delightful display of a village with several running trains. Thu - 5/28/09

The 26-minute presentation celebrates the American spirit from our nation's earliest years right up to the present. The show stands out because of it wonderfully evocative settings, its detailed sets, and the 35 superb Audio-Animatronics players, some of the most lifelike ever created by the Disney organization. Kathy and Rachel are in their rain gear as we had back to the hotel. We had a great time on my birthday at Epcot. We had planned to watch IllumiNations but the lightening and thunder curtailed those plans! We did get to see Honey I Shrunk the Audience, The American Adventure show, Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros, The Seas with Nemo & Friends, Turtle Talk with Crush, Caribbean Coral Reef, Soarin'; purchase Minnie Ears Headband, flashlight, and Epcot Pin; walked the ENTIRE World Showcase; and eat. It was a full day starting with our 7:30 a.m. trip back to the airport to catch the Disney bus transport to our hotel, The Polynesian, and then two visits to Epcot with a break at the hotel for lunch and swimming. • Our first stop was breakfast at the Main Street Bakery. Main Street represents an ideal American town. It is believed Walt Disney got the idea from Marceline, Missouri, the tiny rural town that was his boyhood home. Most of the structures along the thorough-fare are given over to shops, and each one is different. The trolleys are drawn by Belgians and Percherons, two strong breeds of horse that once pulled plows in Europe. These animals - weighing in at about a ton each and shod with plastic - pull the trolley the length of Main Street about two dozen times during each of their working days. Fri – 05/29/09

  • Rachel is amazed the Spanish moss draping the branches of the tree is real while the tree was constructed entirely by the props department! The roots, which are made of concrete, poke 42 feet into the ground, and about 300,000 lifelike polyethylene leaves "grow" on the tree's 1,400 individual branches. The castle is in the background.
