Read MoreBull Run Regional Park (16-19 Jul 2008). This is a great local park close to home that offers camping, a water park, miniature golf, hiking and wildlife. It is also close to the Manassas National Battlefield Park. We enjoyed it enough that we made a couple of trips there.
See more photos in the photo albumWe've never seen a camground like this before. All of the camp sites were built from heavy decks that extended over the hillside at the beautiful Edgar Evins State Park, which is located about an hour east of Nashville, Tennessee. 2007 Kane Family Reunion (Jul 2007). July was a busy month. We left California early on the 4th of July, which put us in Green River, Utah, in time to watch the fireworks show. From there we headed to Denver, where Kathy and I headed to Washington DC for a week to look for a place to live while the kids stayed with John and Tracy then Grandma and Papa. Once we got back, we headed to the family reunion at the Pine River Lodge on Vallecito Lake, which is located 23 miles northeast of Durango, Colorado. On the way back to California, we stopped by Mesa Verde National Park. * On the way to Colorado * Kane Family Reunion * Mesa Verde National Park
Montaña de Oro and Morro Bay (5 - 7 Jul 2006). After visiting the Roth family for the 4th of July, Kathy and Christopher had to head home so that Kathy could work and Christopher could play in an All-Stars baseball tournament. Sydney and I weren't ready to end our vacation, so we headed back to the coast where we enjoyed a day at the Corallina Cove tide pool at Montaña de Oro State Park and a couple days on the beach in Morro Bay where we saw humpback whales just offshore See more photos in the photo album
Pismo Beach (30 Jun - 3 Jul 2006). This is yet another great State Park on the beach. We enjoyed swimming in the ocean, going for LONG walks along the beach and catching Pacific mackerel off the Pismo Beach Pier. From Pismo, we headed to King City/Lockwood to visit the Roth family for the 4th of July. Yellowstone (27 Jul - 7 Aug 2004). Though it was a long drive, this was a great trip. We got to eat meals prepared by Chef Frank, see some beautiful sights and plenty of animals and best of all, we were able to spend time with the family (twenty in all). Along the way, our favorite stop was Grand Teton National Park. We'd definitely like to return there again. Everything didn't work out as we had originally planned (e.g., one of the RVs didn't quite make it), but we weren't too far off the plan either. Photo albums: Heading to YNP (28 - 31 Jul 2004) Yellowstone NP (1 - 6 Aug 2004)
Lake Casitas (1-2 May 2004). The weather was hot, so Pat and the kids decided to do a spur of the moment trip to the lake. We tried our hand at fishing, but once Sydney saw a big bass in the shallows, she pulled her line out of the water and said she only wanted to catch little fish. Christopher was ready for the big ones though. See all the photos in the photo album.
Montaña de Oro (9-17 Apr 2004). What a great trip this was. We drove into Montaña de Oro on Friday at noon and were lucky enough to find an empty camping spot, which would serve as our home base for the next week. Some of the things we did: Easter egg hunt in Los Osos; toured Morro Bay; headed to the Roth's for Easter Sunday (hiking and a little horseback riding in the Los Padres National Forest near Wagon Cave); checked out the tide pools and sand beaches; rode our bicycles; explored caves; toasted marshallows over the fire and more. See all the photos from this trip in the photo album. Be sure to check out the other great coastline pictures on http://www.californiacoastline.org.
Oceano Campground (7-10 Nov 2003). This trip wasn't as much fun as the last one. It rained almost non-stop over a 24-hr period and we had a leak in the trailer's roof where some caulking had separated. Fortunately, the sun came out for the rest of the weekend and we were able to watch thousands of monarchs that had migrated to the area.

We've made frequent stops in the Pismo Beach area over the years passing through on the 101 freeway, but we've never really spent much time there. It was time to fix that. The highlight of the trip was a visit to the California Coast Candy Co. (on Pier Ave. in Oceano) where the owner, Neil Velie (who Pat had met a month earlier on a flight from DC to LAX), showed the kids how he cooked, pulled and wrapped salt water taffy. Neil also invited us over for a BBQ dinner, which made quite an impression on the kids (I've never seen Syndey eat so much steak).

We were able to enjoy the long weekend camping with friends (Ernie, Vivian, Sierra and Eli) and participating in a FishingKids.com event. Sydney won the casting contest (and a trophy) for her age group (5- to 9-yrs old) and Christopher won a fishing pole for long distance casting (there was no such category, but the friendly event organizers were impressed with his casting abilities and wanted to have fun with it).
El Capitan State Beach (16-20 Jan 2003). We enjoyed "El Cap" so much, we planned a return visit with Kathy. Pat went Thursday night so he'd be the first in line on Friday when D-loop opened, which allowed us to get THE best camp site--on the bluff's edge overlooking the ocean. Vivian, Sierra and Eli visited on Saturday to bike and play on the beach. Needless to say, it was a great weekend.
Be sure to check out the other great coastline pictures on http://www.californiacoastline.org.El Capitan State Beach (1-3 Nov 2002). Pat and the kids needed a quick weekend getaway while Kathy was doing her Creative Memories albums. The weather was beautiful, the seas were calm and we sat on the ocean bluffs watching the dolphins play.
Be sure to check out the other great coastline pictures on http://www.californiacoastline.org.Utah (23 Aug - 1 Sep 2002). We headed east from California while John & family and Andrew & family headed west from Colorado. Our destination was Fish Lake, where we stayed (Aug 24-28) in the Mackinaw Campground (sites 56 and 57) and had a great time hiking, biking and fishing. After Andrew & family headed home, we moved camp for the rest of the week (Aug 28-31) to Ruby's Inn RV Park & Campground outside of Bryce Canyon National Park (a must see). On our way home, we spent the day at Zion National Park and the night at the Circusland RV Park (a.k.a., parking lot) in Las Vegas (we also spent the first night of our trip there as well). Limekiln State Park (26-28 Jul 2002). This is a stunningly beautiful, small campground in the Big Sur area and it offers access to the ocean, redwoods and a waterfall. We had reserved a tent site at this campground before we purchased the RV, so we reverted to tent camping for this trip.
Be sure to check out the other great coastline pictures on http://www.californiacoastline.org.King City and Lockwood (Independence Day 4-7 Jul 2002). We arrived in King City just as the Independence Day Parade was passing through town. While waiting in traffic, we met up with the Roth family and headed into San Lorenzo Park for the Valley Heritage Day celebration. The rest of the weekend was enjoyed camping outside the Roth house.
Serrano on Big Bear Lake (21-23 Jun 2002). This is a beautiful campground and there are some great lake-side hiking/biking trails where you can enjoy the scenery for hours. Our site (46) was fine, but our preference in the future would be (in order) 96, 95, 57*, 99, 122, 56*, 37* and 40* (*sites w/ hook-ups).
McGrath State Beach (30 May - 2 Jun 2002). This was our first trip in the new 5th wheel. Kathy and I had a romantic dinner for two on the 30th (our 10th wedding anniversary), then we came back with the kids for the weekend.
